Reports are emerging that an attempt by Moscow to silence a Georgian critic has led to the shut down of some of the world's most popular social networking sites.
On Friday, Twitter was shut down for several hours, while Facebook, Google, YouTube, and Livejournal also experienced major problems following a large-scale denial-of-service or DOS attack.
A 34-year-old economics lecturer, Georgy, who uses the name 'Cyxymu' in his blogs and criticizes Russia's military presence in the Caucasus, has apparently been the target of the attack carried out by Russian hackers.
"It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard," Facebook's chief security officer, Max Kelly said, confirming reports that Cyxymu was the target.
"We're actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can,” he added.
