In Sarah Palin we see someone unusually narcissistic, even for a public figure who seeks the limelight. I've never met her and would never try to diagnose someone at a distance.
Yet she is certainly not crazy, and I doubt anyone could say she has a narcissistic personality disorder. She seems far too successful in all aspects of her life for that to be the case.
Yet her exaggerated sense of her own worth, her indifference to the rights and feelings of others, her denial of unpleasant realities, her fondness for trivial lies easily disproved, her nonchalant self-pride, and her intemperate rage against anyone who challenges her self-appraisal suggest to me that 'narcissistic' is a useful adjective for describing her.
