As the Bush administration now passes into history one of the most talked about aspects of his time in office was his sanctioning of torture.
Images from Abu Ghraib and reports from Guantanamo Bay have sickened us as we realized that we had sunk to such a low moral ebb following Bush's 2002 signing of a memorandum stating that Geneva Conventions regarding the treatment of prisoners would not apply to members of al-Qaida or the Taliban.
Even though torture has never been shown to be effective (bear in mind that "24" is just a TV show) and is more likely to produce false confessions than useful information, this administration has, at its highest levels (the president, the vice president, the secretary of defense and the president's legal counsel) insisted upon using torture techniques.
