This is a Song Dedicated to the 34 Men Killed, and to the Survivors of the USS Liberty, attacked by Israel on June 8, 1967.

IN 1967, ON THE 8TH DAY OF JUNE–CAME THE ATTACK OF THE LIBERTY,
AND THE NEEDLESS LOSS OF MANY OF HER CREW.

THEY SAID THAT ISRAELI FORCES KNEW NOT OF THE LIBERTY’S TRUE IDENTITY,
AND SO THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF HER SERENITY.
THEY ATTACKED THE SILENT SHIP, MAKING A FORTY-FOOT HOLE IN HER STARBOARD,
KILLING THIRTY-FOUR, AND WOUNDING ALMOST TWO HUNDRED MORE;
THEIR JETS SENDING DOWN MERCILESS NAPALM,
IT LOOKED LIKE A DEVIL’S STARWAR.

In close proximity to the war zone, the Liberty’s crew was reassured by the presence of Israeli aircraft. But at 2:00 p.m., sailors sun­bathing on the deck saw fighter jets approach­ing in attack formation.

Red flashes from the wings of the fighters were followed by explosions, blood and death. A beau­tiful afternoon in the eastern Mediterranean suddenly became a nightmare.

Freedom was Nice

~

Intolerant governments across the globe are “slowly crushing” activist and advocacy groups that play an essential role in the development of democracy, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday.

Social activists, Clinton said, are being harassed, censored, cut off from funding, arrested, prosecuted or killed.

Funny that she did not mention Canada.

Secret new Canadian laws came to light during G20, to the surprise of the legal community, which allowed the unapologetic police to do what they wanted to Canadian citizens.

Security personnel are certainly not being nice in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

And when the United States government moves forward toward mandatory yearly flu vaccinations, what are they doing to the concept and reality of freedom?

US Questions Its Unwavering Support for Israel

There are questions that rarely get asked in Washington.

For years, the mantra that America's intimate alliance with Israel was as good for the US as it was the Jewish state went largely unchallenged by politicians aware of the cost of anything but unwavering support.

But swirling in the background when Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, arrives in Washington tomorrow to patch up relations with the White House will be a question rarely voiced until recently: is Israel ‑ or, at the very least, its current government ‑ endangering US security and American troops?
