UPDATE: Man shot inside Bay Pines VA Medical Center by police has died (VIDEO)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -  At around 5 p.m. on Friday, officials say a 68-year-old man started making threats in the emergency department.

"He actually walked into the lobby and made a statement that he had a bomb," said FBI spokesman Dave Couvertier.

According to the FBI, the man lunged at officers with a knife, which led to shots being fired by police.

The veteran was treated at the hospital, but died shortly after as a result of his injuries.

Authorities say he was carrying a backpack when he entered the hospital. Inside, they found what appeared to be a plastic PVC pipe bomb. But it was later determined by bomb techs to be a hoax.

No bombs or other threats were found. No one else was injured.
