FBI issues 'Haitian Earthquake Relief Fraud Alert'

The Federal Bureau of Investigations warns consumers to be sure their donations are going to a bona fide charitable organization.

More than 400 Internet addresses related to Haiti have popped up since the Jan. 12.

While some sites are legitimate others aren't and may also contain malicious software, spyware or other hazardous content, based on similar activities following after Hurricane Katrina and other disasters.

Some web sites feature a bogus "donate" button but either the money won't go to a relief fund or the site will harvest your credit card information for fraudulent use including identity theft.

The Red Cross and other legitimate relief efforts have successfully set up systems to allow donations by cell phone, but fraud could arrive there too.
