Army veteran from York describes 'scary' scene at Ford Hood

York native Darlene Beckett, an Army veteran and daughter of city councilwoman Carol Hill-Evans, was a block away when a gunman opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas.

While she was in the PX with the rest of the midday shoppers -- everybody was on their cell phones, she said -- Beckett didn't have any of that information.

Early on, she said, information was spotty. At first she said she heard the shootings were in the housing area of the base.

She heard there were two shooters; then five. Nobody knew.
