Washington Police chief refuses to enforce new gun law, wants to create ‘sanctuary city’ for firearms

Responding to a burdensome new law from liberals in Washington State that makes the state’s gun laws some of the strictest in the nation, a police chief is advocating to make his town a “sanctuary city” for gun owners.

In a move that steals a page out of the Democratic Party’s “sanctuary city” play book that favors illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens by flouting our immigration laws, Republic Police Chief Loren Culp wants to create a safe haven for gun owners to protect them from Initiative 1639, which prevents those under the age of 21 from buying semiautomatic weapons and allows for gun owners to be criminally prosecuted if a “prohibited” person gains access to their firearms.

“I cannot and will not enforce this law, it goes against the oath of my office,” Culp said in an appearance on Fox & Friends, pointing not only to the U.S. Constitution, but also the Washington State constitution, which he said was even more explicit about the right to bear arms.

Titled “2nd Amendment Sanctuary City Ordinance,” Culp made the proposal in a post on the police department’s Facebook page to “prevent federal and state infringement on the right to keep and bear arms.”
“I can’t make legislation but I can recommend it, which I have. What do you think?” Culp begins, before laying out a well thought out plan to protect responsible gun owners.

The proposed ordinance includes a passage saying the City of Republic will call on other jurisdictions in the state “to join us in this action by passing a similar ordinance.”

The police chief said most of the counties in Washington don’t support the I-1639 law, but that high-population liberal areas like Seattle and Spokane were successful in passing the legislation.
Culp also said he has “tremendous support of my community for doing this,” he said.

The pro-Second Amendment National Rifle Association has filed a lawsuit challenging the new law, according to Fox News.

right to bear arms shall not be infringed, no sanctuary city needed.
