Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni: War Criminal
Most of us have heard of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, the namesake of Simon Wiesenthal, who is the world renowned Nazi hunter.
Mr. Wiesenthal and his famous center hunt down war criminals and prosecute them for their war crimes. And I will say one thing for sure; they are a tenacious bunch of war-crime-fighters!
In a press release earlier this year, the Simon Wiesenthal Center boasted of some “seventy-six convictions…against war criminals…at least forty-eight new indictments…filed, and hundreds of new investigations…initiated” since 2001.
This Simon Wiesenthal Center success has been, to a very large, extent the result of a legal concept known as “universal jurisdiction,” a claim of universal criminal jurisdiction over crimes committed outside of the prosecuting sates boundaries.
Speaking of war crimes, just read in the London based Telegraph this month that a London judge issued an arrest warrant for a foreign official for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. And the Simon Wiesenthal Center did not have to do any of the war-crime-fighting legwork on this one. In fact, the Simon Wiesenthal Center was not involved at all. But the UK magistrate did exercise the exact same legal strategy that the Simon Wiesenthal Center has used so successfully; again that is “universal jurisdiction”.
