Ten years on from its creation, calls are mounting from legal and human rights experts for closure of the 'torture' center on Cuba.

The former chief prosecutor for the US government at Guantánamo Bay has accused the administration he served of operating a "law-free zone" there, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the order to establish the detention camp on Cuba.

Veterans attempt ‘citizens arrest’ of War Criminal Donald Rumsfeld in Boston (VIDEO)

Several members of the group Veterans for Peace were escorted out of the Old South Meeting House in Boston Monday night after they attempted a citizen’s arrest of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

“I went down in front and looked Donald Rumsfeld in the eye and said, ‘I’m making a citizen’s arrest,’” protester Nate Goldschlag told WCVB-TV.

Court rules Rumsfeld can be held liable for torture of U.S. civilians in Iraq

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on Monday refused to dismiss a lawsuit against former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for creating policies that caused American civilians to be tortured by the U.S. military in Iraq.

In a 2 to 1 decision, the court ruled that the lawsuit filed by Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel, two American citizens who were allegedly tortured at a U.S. military prison in Iraq in 2006, provided adequate evidence that Rumsfeld was personally responsible for their treatment and that Rumsfeld was not entitled to qualified immunity.

The new Obama Social Security benefit: A free begging cup! Obama will save Social Security by taking it away from old people and the disabled.

This week, the so-called Gang Of Six (senators Dick Durbin, Mark Warner, Kent Conrad, Saxby Chambliss, Tom Coburn and Mike Crapo) introduced a plan to reduce the federal budget deficit.

The plan would slash Medicare by a third of a trillion dollars. It would require Social Security benefits to be reduced through cost of living adjustments that would cut off between 500 and 1,000 dollars in an initial phase, and then require additional Social Security cuts in a second phase.

There would be no tax increases to balance these cuts.

On the contrary, the Gang of Six plan would cut taxes paid by corporations and wealthy Americans by more than one and a half trillion dollars – thus requiring even more cuts in Social Security, Medicare, education, science and alternative energy programs.

The bankers and bosses were happy to see the Republican extreme right wing play chicken with default in order to get cuts in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

But as the Aug. 2 deadline for default comes closer, the bankers and financiers want the game of chicken to come to an end. They want the borrowing power of the capitalist government to be expanded beyond the $14.3 trillion it is now.

Why? Because, in the first place, the Treasury has to borrow $500 billion on Aug. 2 to refinance debts to bondholders. Two days later, $87 billion in Treasury bills have to be paid off. (Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, CNBC Squawk Box, July 18) That is the bread and butter of the billionaire Wall Street super loan sharks. They thrive and grow even richer from collecting interest on the government debt.

New Zealand quake exposes possible Israeli spy ring when dead Israeli found with 5 passports

One of the victims of the February earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand may have been an Israeli spy, according to a report in The Southland Times.

The man, Ofer Benyamin Mizrahi, 24, was carrying five passports with him at the time of his death, according to the Times.

The newspaper's reports centered around a possible breach of New Zealand's national police computers.

New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key, who was in Los Angeles Tuesday, declined to comment on the report other than to say "there had been no misuse of the police computer system or New Zealand passports by Israeli citizens," The Southland Times reported.

..Mizrahi was one of three Israelis who died in the Feb. 22 earthquake, according to the Israeli media outlet Haaretz.

US Justice Department Gives American Torturers a Pass

Nuremberg, Germany—At the end of World War Two, many high ranking German military and civilians were tried and hanged for Crimes Against Humanity.

In the tribunals many of these defendants raised the defense that they were only following orders. That defense was scoffed at and ridiculed since these men and women (yes, we hanged German women too) were involved in one of the greatest mass murders in history.

The US Justice Department recently announced that, of the 101 cases involving torture of post-9/11 detainees by the CIA and its contractors, 99 were being closed.

The remaining two, which involved deaths in custody, would continue to be investigated.

The decision to drop virtually all these cases is based on a policy promulgated by Attorney General Eric Holder shortly after he took office.

Holder wrote that the Justice Department "would not prosecute anyone who acted in good faith and within the scope of the legal guidance given by the Office of Legal Counsel regarding the interrogation of detainees."

An army of homeschooled kids, trained for political organizing, helped elect Michele Bachmann

It was the nearly six dozen 12 to 19-year-old homeschooled kids who went door to door for Bachmann who helped her hold onto her House seat.

The kids were members of Generation Joshua, a group that trains homeschooled kids for political organizing.

For Bachmann, who sees herself as the future leader of the Republican Party, these are her would-be future constituents.

Which is why they will again be a force to be reckoned with in her presidential bid.

There's some drama that has been developing recently between what the President wants and what the Republican Congress wants. The problem is that it is a staged 'reality show'.

To me, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are like good cops and bad cops. They are both the same (cops) with one agenda, but one makes believe they are on your side.

Right now, Obama is having this epic battle with the Republican Congress.

Good cop Obama threatens that seniors and the disabled will not receive their Social Security checks on August 3rd if the bad cop Republicans don't increase the debt limit. The Republicans won't give in unless Obama cuts something from Social Security and Medicare.

Eventually, Obama will cut some Social Security and Medicare benefits and still come out smelling like a rose claiming that he had to do it so seniors get their checks in August. He cuts Social Security but he is a hero because "he saved" Social Security. Yeah, Obama! (LOL)

Obama, the Democrats and the Republicans in Congress all work for the same 'person': the ONEPERCENTER.

They were all elected with money from the richest one percent of Americans (and the world) and their job is to protect the wealth and power of the ONEPERCENTER.

Obama and Congress will continue to do this by further cutting taxes of the wealthy while increasing the burden on the poor and what little remains of the middle class.

Obama and the Congress will cut salaries, teachers, policemen, firemen, welfare and medical services as the middle class and poor tax dollars won't pay for these without the taxes of the rich and corporations.

Whatever money remains in the coffers will be spent on the military industrial complex and on wars of conquest for more oil. The money will pay for soldiers, guns, weapons, missiles, bombs, fighter planes, tanks and funerals.

Little by little, Obama and our congress is returning the American people to a time just before 1776, a time of only rich and poor, a time of only royalty and peasants.
