Ted Cruz Introduces HUGE Constitutional Amendment That Would Drain The Washington Swamp

On Friday Texas Senator Ted Cruz introduced a constitutional amendment that would restrict senators to a limit of two six-year terms.

The Amendment also targets members of the House of Representatives and if ratified, would limit those members to three two-year terms.

Currently, terms in both houses of Congress are unlimited, although there are limits to the number of terms members of Congress may have on committees. Cruz has been a longtime critic of the Constitution not including term limits. He introduced a similar bill a year ago, according to ABC News.

The Amendment has 3 cosponsors, Republican Sens. Marco Rubio, Mike Lee, and David Purdue.

“For too long, members of Congress have abused their power and ignored the will of the American people,” Cruz told ABC. “Term limits on members of Congress offer a solution to the brokenness we see in Washington, D.C. It is long past time for Congress to hold itself accountable. I urge my colleagues to submit this constitutional amendment to the states for speedy ratification.”

For the amendment to be passed, it would need to be approved by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and then ratified by 38 states. The last constitutional amendment, the 27th, was ratified in 1992, as reported by Business Insider.

Cruz has been a strong advocate for term limits since his 2016 quest for the GOP nomination and ran with that message.

in February of 2017 Cruz also discussed similar legislation at the annual CPAC conference.
“This election was the American people saying, ‘Enough already with the corruption in both parties, Democrats and Republicans who have been here too long,’” Cruz said.

He told the attendees that one significant way politicians could deliver on “draining the swamp” is by paving the way for term limits for Congress.

“President [Donald] Trump campaigned on draining the swamp,” Cruz said. “We have majorities in both houses. I think we ought to demonstrate that we have heard the voters; we bring up term limits, pass it, send it to the states for ratification.”

This of course is not for the senate or congress to decide - but with those that have the power - so we should have a Referendum!
