BREAKING NEWS: 300,000+ Gallon Oil Spill Staten Island Hurricane Sandy (VIDEO)

Coast Guard responds to large oil spill in Staten Island's Arthur Kill waterway

The spill at Motiva petroleum terminals including in Sewaren, N.J. -- across from the Charleston section of Staten Island, just north of the Outerbridge Crossing -- was first reported Wednesday night. A total of 130 responders are on the scene, according to the Coast Guard.

"A total of four diesel oil storage tanks were damaged, two of which are believed to have released some of their contents," the Coast Guard reported. Prior to Hurricane Sandy's arrival, each tank held 336,000 gallons of oil, but no official estimate of the amount of oil spilled has been released.
