Bonobo great ape that could 'speak English' dies of a cold at sanctuary

The lexigrams on her plastic cards allowed Panbanisha to spontaneously communicate with researchers and to have simple conversations with them


 
One of two rare bonobos whose understanding of spoken English brought them international acclaim has died at an Iowa sanctuary where the director is under investigation for allegations she failed to care for the apes.
