Subway riders question NYC Police ‘ridiculous’ show of force

Some people in New York are wondering whether the presence of police officers toting machine guns through the city's subway tunnels is really a necessary response to the subway bombings in Moscow on Monday.

"I think it's ridiculous," Torey Deprisest, a tourist from Ohio, told the New York Post. "The attack happened in a different country and had nothing to do with Americans. I'd be nervous seeing cops with machine guns on the train. It makes people afraid when they don't need to be."

Last night on CNN, Larry King discussed the growth of the Tea Parties and their effect on the Republican Party.

David Frum, a speech writer in the Bush White House, and Scott McClellan, the former press secretary to Bush, decried the Tea Parties for their extreme views, like seeking to abolish Social Security.

McClellan explained that the Tea Parties have “limited appeal” because they are simply a “divisive protest movement” that “plays too much to people’s fears and hatred”

No but really, this guy subbing for Glenn Beck on his radio show, “Doc Thompson,” says this in response to the new 10% tanning salon tax.

I would guess that most tanning sessions are from light-skinned Americans. Why would the President of the United Stats of America — a man who says he understands racism, a man who has been confronted with racism — why would he sign such a racist law?

Why would he agree to do that? Well now I feel the pain of racism.

Plastic surgeons had something resembling a lobby, so obviously it had to be taken out. And now we have a racist tax, the end.)

Having just told a 17 year old Muslim student at University of Western Ontario to “take a camel” rather than inconvenience the rest by flying on an airplane, American reactionary, Ann Coulter, was scheduled to give a speech at the University of Ottawa on Tuesday March 23.

Thousands of protestors gathered in the rain, outside the Ottawa University building in opposition to the propagation of Coulter’s racist brand of conservatism.

The event very poorly organized by the sponsors and completely overshadowed by large numbers of protestors.

At the last second Coulter’s entourage decided to cancel the speech. They claimed that the cancellation was due to “security concerns”; a curious excuse, given that the protestors were located outside of the building and were demonstrating peacefully.

Her reactionary supporters responded by marching out of the building, fists clenched in the air, screaming “commies off campus”.

Republicans trumpeted the “obligation” (at gunpoint) that Americans buy health care insurance from large monopolistic corporations for decades, long before Hill and Bill attempted to foist their version on the plebs.

Republicans are miffed because Obama and the Democrats co-opted their original concept, minus a mechanism they proposed for controlling costs. Republicans are not opposed to totalitarian care, they are simply opposed to the Democrat version.

If you believe Republicans are serious about controlling costs, look no further than Bush’s $3 trillion budget proposal in 2008 (a record at the time). When Bush took office, the national debt was $5.73 trillion. When he left, it was $10.7 trillion.

Pepsi and Coke Looking To Replace Dangerous Aspartame With Natural Stevia In Diet Sodas

A race to develop natural, zero-calorie sweeteners is bubbling up in the nation's $100 billion beverage industry.

PepsiCo Inc. said Tuesday they will reformulate its beverages with natural, no-calorie sweeteners such as stevia, an herb grown in South America and Asia, and to find new ones.

Soft drink sales are falling as people look to cut calories and worry over other sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup and aspartame.

Rival Coca-Cola Co. is likewise looking for sweetener alternatives like stevia.

"We think the scramble is on to get the taste profile, and it seems like both companies are close to it," Coke spokesperson said.

The possibility of a tax on sugary beverages, which some health leaders and lawmakers are calling for to fight obesity, makes the search all the more important.
