Ten years on from its creation, calls are mounting from legal and human rights experts for closure of the 'torture' center on Cuba.

The former chief prosecutor for the US government at Guantánamo Bay has accused the administration he served of operating a "law-free zone" there, on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the order to establish the detention camp on Cuba.

Court rules Rumsfeld can be held liable for torture of U.S. civilians in Iraq

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on Monday refused to dismiss a lawsuit against former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for creating policies that caused American civilians to be tortured by the U.S. military in Iraq.

In a 2 to 1 decision, the court ruled that the lawsuit filed by Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel, two American citizens who were allegedly tortured at a U.S. military prison in Iraq in 2006, provided adequate evidence that Rumsfeld was personally responsible for their treatment and that Rumsfeld was not entitled to qualified immunity.

Jeremy Scahill, national security reporter for The Nation, appeared on Current TV’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann Thursday night to discuss the latest revelations about waterboarding and other “water treatment” torture practices used by the Department of Defense.

“What we are learning is more sick details of torture tactics that most certainly were authorized and advocated at the highest levels of the Bush administration,” he said.

Scahill also noted that Obama has an “extremely poor record” of holding U.S. agents accountable for alleged acts of torture.

ACLU asks court to hold CIA in contempt for deliberately destroying torture tapes to cover up evidence

Despite a court order, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) destroyed hundreds of hours of video tape showing the alleged torture of two terror detainees, and now the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is asking a New York judge to punish them for it.

"The record indicates that far from an innocent mistake, Rodriguez ordered the tapes destroyed to cover up evidence that 'would make us look terrible' and be 'devastating' to the CIA,".

Guantanamo Bay doctors 'complicit' in torture

Serious questions about the health of detainees have been raised by newly disclosed files on Guantánamo, as a study claimed that doctors and medical staff at the prison were allegedly complicit in torture.

Obama declares Bradley Manning guilty before he has been tried by saying, "He broke the law!"

"Ï know he did it. He confessed!"

Obama told activist Logan Price in an exchange caught on camera that Manning, 23, had acted irresponsibly and risked the lives of US service members by allegedly sending secret military and diplomatic documents to the website.

"He broke the law," Obama said.

"We're a nation of laws. We don't let individuals make their own decisions about how the laws operate."

Manning supporters maintain that Obama's comments as-commander-in-chief could prejudice the deliberations of a jury of military officers at Manning's eventual military trial.

"President Obama is the commander-in-chief. The jury that demands the guilt or innocence of Bradley Manning will be made up of military officers under his command," said Kevin Zeese, a Bradley Manning Support Group lawyer.

There are still 170 detainees left in this offshore prison. The American public seems unwilling to allow a fair trial for any of them, instead exposing them to military tribunals.
