U.S. angered by claims it rigged Afghan elections

The U.S. government is angry over a claim by Afghan President Hamid Karzai that foreign governments were behind the rigging of election results in the country late last year.

The inference that the U.S. was behind the fraud was clear from Karzai's comments on Thursday when he said the widespread fraud in last year's national elections that returned him to power was the work not of Afghans, but foreigners including Western diplomats in Kabul, who were trying to weaken his government.
