Is Scientology Imploding? Watching the Panic After a Former Executive Dares to Question Church Management

The world of Scientology watching is still reeling after Debbie Cook's New Year's Eve e-mail landed in the inboxes of thousands of church members Saturday night.

A few minutes after midnight, we began receiving copies of the broadside, written by one of Scientology's most important former executives.

Citing the words of L. Ron Hubbard, Cook trashed the church's current management under leader David Miscavige, complaining about a "new age of continuous fundraising" and "extreme over-regging."

Scientologists: How Many Of Them Are There, Anyway?

We thought we'd take this relaxing time to ruminate about something that tends to come up from time to time with Scientology watchers: just how many Scientologists are there, anyway?

That question came up again this week when the Associated Press happened to mention that Scientology claims 10 million members worldwide.

If that number were true, Scientology would be a little smaller than Judaism around the world, and well ahead of the Baha'i faith.

And if you think that's true, we have a lovely bridge here in New York City that you might be interested to hear is for sale...


When Scientology says it has millions of "members," Jentzsch (president of Scientology in 2000) admitted under oath, it is actually talking about the total number of people, since L. Ron Hubbard first came up with Dianetics in 1950, who have ever picked up a Hubbard book, or filled out a "personality test," or taken a course, or otherwise had any interaction with the organization in any way.

At one time, Rathbun was one of the highest ranking members of Scientology, privy to its innermost secrets, a man who "audited" (counseled) members as important as Tom Cruise, and a key figure in the organization's efforts to fend off curious reporters.

Since Rathbun "blew" a few years ago (Scientology's word for defecting), it's been fascinating to watch him become the organization's biggest problem.

That was never more clear than this week, when Scientology sent a bizarre goon squad to intimidate Rathbun at his Corpus Christi home.

Scientology church probed over ‘slave labor’

The FBI is investigating the Church of Scientology over allegations of human trafficking.

The church pays some of its workers as little as $50 per week, forces children into "billion-year" contracts and sometimes uses physical force to keep church members from escaping Scientology compounds.

The allegations center around Sea Org, a religious order inside the church whose 6,000 members are used by the church as labor, including maintenance of church properties.
