Yesterday, as the Obama administration “approved the first deepwater oil and gas exploration plan since last year’s Macondo oil well blowout,” “emulsified oil, oil mousse and tar balls from an unknown source were washing up on beaches from Grand Isle to West Timbalier Island along the Gulf of Mexico, a stretch of about 30 miles.”

NEW OIL SPILL IN GULF OF MEXICO - Photos of “100-mile long oil slick spotted off Louisiana coast” — “Slick is rapidly expanding”

A large oil slick – 12-miles wide by 100-miles long – was spotted yesterday off Grand Isle, Louisiana, by pilot Bonny Schumaker, who heads up the California-based environmental nonprofit “On Wings of Care.” Ms. Schumaker confirmed that the slick is rapidly expanding…

New Orleans photographer Jerry Moran, who was flying with Schumaker, filed aerial photos.

Ms. Schumaker observed the slick roughly 25 miles from where BP’s Macondo well spewed more than 200 million gallons of crude into the Gulf last year.

Dead baby dolphins continue to wash ashore on Gulf of Mexico beaches

Dozens of dead baby and adult dolphins have washed ashore on Gulf beaches since the beginning of the year, according to new reports.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says the rising death count is exceptionally high, especially because the normal birthing season for dolphins -- a time at which some baby dolphins inevitably end up dying -- is normally several months from now.

BP faced a broadening crisis Tuesday with tar balls from the Gulf oil spill turning up on Texas beaches, as the firm's clean-up costs soared and British officials reportedly mulled a possible BP collapse.

A giant Taiwanese ship deployed to boost the clean-up meanwhile remained in testing, with initial results inconclusive because of choppy waters, and bad weather on the horizon threatened to further disrupt clean-up efforts.

Despite Rumors, Officials Insist No Gulf Evacuation Planned

Despite growing rumors that there are plans for an imminent evacuation of the area affected by the BP oil spill, officials insist that no such program is being considered, attributing the stories to Internet bloggers with overactive imaginations.
