Imagine: No Religion And All The People Living In Peace

#####

By Chimpplanet

It's hard to believe that a popular singer/writer like John Lennon probably had the solution for peace in the world. His song "Imagine" seemed to cover this solution.

Religion is probably responsible for the majority of deaths in this world. Even today, Israeli Jews are slaughtering Palestinian Moslems and non-Jews in Gaza and before that they did the same in Palestine and in Lebanon.

For about 60 years since the State of Israel was "dumped" in Palestine, the Palestinians have also been killing Jews because they feel that Israel is stealing their lands.

Today, also, American Christians are killing Moslems in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia and would like to do the same in Iran.

George Bush has stated that God had told him to invade Iraq and we all know he's a "Born Again Christian". Some feel that this is the second Crusade. The official count is over 100,000 civilians killed in Iraq due to the war. Some independent university studies have put this figure at closer to two million dead innocent Iraqi men, women, children and babies and many millions have been displaced from their homes.

A bit quiet at the moment is also the fighting between Catholics and Protestants that has gone on for decades in Ireland, also with many fatalities.

The former Yugoslavia was pretty much decimated once their dictator was removed and the Moslems and Christians went at each others throats like wild animals. The UN is still in there keeping the peace for now.

We all know about the Holocaust in Germany in which many Jews were imprisoned and killed by Hitler's Christians and Catholics.

The major past wars that killed many were mostly Christians killing Moslems during the Crusades and Catholics killing all non-believers during the Inquisition.

Even Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World with an entourage of Catholic priests who used his military to kill all the natives in the Americas who did not convert to Chris' religion.

People even now are also persecuted and killed in China for believing in religions not sanctioned by the government.

I'm certain that there are many more examples of the deadly effect religions have had or currently have on the human beings of this "civilized" world.

So it's no wonder that John Lennon had it right when he sang:

"Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace ".

One of my favorite songs . . .

I don't think that religion, per-se is responsible for the violence. There are shared, core beliefs, a universal "golden rule" that is found in most faiths. But something in our wiring makes humans "need" religion -- or think they do. It's when leaders or aspiring leaders exploit that need to promote truly non-religious agendas that all the trouble happens.

Pass the opium.

I think you are blaming religion when, at least sometimes, that is NOT the real issue. Palestine/Israel is primarily a dispute about LAND, not religion. Palestinian Muslims and Christians are equally victimized, and most Zionists were SECULAR. Secular ideas like Communism, racism, extreme nationalism, and unbridled capitalism have also played a role in killing millions. I bet if you take religion out of the equation, people will just wrap their fight in some other flag. Religion is just one avatar of the same spirit.

The sky is the roof of my church
And everything under that roof is inside
My church.
So I am always inside my church.
The Roof, the Roof, my God I do go on about
My Roof, but it is the only roof we have:
The same roof that the San looked up at
And then painted the world's first pictures: Art.
The same roof, now reeling, its ceiling lurching from
Our habit of playing with nuclear fire, and, oh,
The Gods will never tire of reminding us that
We should not try to fly too close
To the sun, to fly through the roof, no,
Run they tell us, run,
For hubris will cull us,
Down to surround our conceits
With grandstand seats
To Armageddon.
And it won't be sudden
(A whimper, not a Bang, I'm told
By some serious Prophets.)
Done in running heats of war,
Drowning us in the hungry cries from our brothers
Across the wire between the Haves and the
Crosses borne by the abused
Children we really do know so well:
There are holes in our philosophies, too
That we can no longer suffer in disrepair:
This hole in my roof is a hole in the roof
Of the whole of Christianity,
The whole of Islam
And the whole of the Tao Te Ching.
But the whole of mankind, surely,
Can just look up at the sky?
Can find a way
To see the roof of my Church?
The San did.

Or are you all locked into
Looking down at the floor
Of my Church,
Our home, our earth,
This common ground we walk on,
Pray on, live on, be on,
Cry on, rely on, fight on
And die on?
Can we leave it while we are dying
On it without some measure
Of trying on it?
Armageddon, the lifting of the veil.

You may be right as Moslem nations fight Moslem nations (Like Iran and Iraq), however, If Israelis were not Jews in the middle of a "Moslem World", I don't believe what has happened in the 1967 war and what has happened when Israel attacked Lebanon the last few times, would have happened.
The Iraqis, for example, hate the US for being invaders, but, they hate us more for being infidels (non-Moslems) in their sacred land. Religion is a major factor in the Israel- Palestine wars and in all of the wars I mention above.
And of course, there are other wars for other reasons, besides religion, it's just that religion alone has killed millions and millions.

What about dogmatic atheist socialism? By far most destructive and deadly force in history. No matter who's brainchild it was. Approx. 110 million dead internally in China as direct result of CCCP persecution and repression since 1949. Between 40-60 million dead in Soviet Union as direct result of CCP persecution and repression. Nazi germany targeted all faith for persecution except their own special brand of 'christendom'. Cambodia, Laos, Burma etc. Even today, millions of Falun Gong followers are being brutally persecuted and murdered in China (as well as house christians) for their faith - though our media would rather not talk about this. Seems to me dogmatic atheism is the more destructive force - murdering life, fanatically repressing independent thought.

Anybody hear the song 'Creation Science 101'?

Do a youtube search. It's a hoot.

And yes, I think religion is intrinsically destructive because it cannot coexist with rational critical thinking.

"Dogmatic Atheism" is as real as "Al-Qaeda (The Toilet)" or the "war on Terror" or the fact the George Bush read 75 books while president (Maybe MY PET GOAT type of books) or the war on drugs or the George Bush is a Christian and is sober.
Dogmatic Atheism is the attack of Christians and Catholics on atheists. A fake argument to put the ball in their court. Fundamentalist Jews, Christians and Moslems have caused most of the destruction and death in this world.
