Poor Al Gore; global warming debunked

~

Things aren't going well for Al Gore. Maybe he will have his Oscar and Nobel Peace Prize that he received for his global-warming propaganda "An Inconvenient Truth" taken from him.

Last month thousands of e-mails and other documents leaked from a British research center were published that make a strong case that global warming does not exist and the U.N. has made a decision to investigate the manipulation of climate change research.

All the global warming temperature models predict that global temperatures should be rising, but for the last decade global temperatures have been declining.

The whole global warming hoax is unraveling.

Jon Stewart of Comedy Central put it nicely: "Poor Al Gore, global warming completely debunked by the very Internet you invented."

Arrest in Cuba casts light on U.S. program

~

The program targets an "information blockade" by sneaking computers and more to the island.

The detention of a U.S. government contractor in Cuba has put the spotlight on a secretive U.S. pro-democracy program that ballooned during the Bush administration but has faced persistent questions about its management and effectiveness.

The Cuba program seeks to evade the communist government's "information blockade" by sneaking computers, cell phones, DVD players, and other communications equipment onto the island.

Its budget rose from about $3.5 million in 2000 to $45 million in 2008 under President George W. Bush, who made democracy promotion a priority.

The jailing of the U.S. contractor - who has not been publicly identified - has highlighted the risk of trying to slip communications technology into police states.

It has also revived a debate over whether the U.S. democracy program for Cuba, like a similar one in Iran, can backfire by exposing dissidents to allegations that they are U.S. puppets.

Apple Major Announcement Set For January... New iSlate Tablet Rumors

~

Exclusive: Apple to host event in January

Apple has something big up its sleeve for next month.

Speculation that Apple is preparing to introduce a new tablet style computer has been building all year, and other reports now suggest the tablet will make its debut in January.

It is still unclear exactly what an Apple tablet would include, but most observers expect a sort of large-scale iPhone that has additional features for viewing video and reading books and magazines.

Yesterday we reported that Apple is working to solidify a new round of content deals with TV studios.

Meanwhile, publishers have been working on new versions of digital magazines that would be viewed on touch screen computers.

Apple has explored making tablet style devices for years, only to back off. The company also has a history of scrapping products very close to their scheduled launch dates.

Hillary Clinton: We'll Still Be in Afghanistan in 50 or 60 years

~

"Where are we? In Afghanistan, still? What year is it? 2060?"

On December 1st, President Obama talked about withdrawing U.S. troops from Afghanistan within 18 months.

Everyone now knows that there is no firm withdrawal date from Afghanistan. See this and this.

But in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee on December 2nd, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton actually gave a much longer horizon for the presence of U.S. troops in America:

WRH's Commentary:

These perpetual wars will bankrupt this country, and the US is on the keening edge of insolvency as it is.

Who said the science was settled?

Cosmic rays and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), both already implicated in depleting the Earth’s ozone layer, are also responsible for changes in the global climate, a University of Waterloo scientist reports in a new peer-reviewed paper.

In his paper, Qing-Bin Lu, a professor of physics and astronomy, shows how CFCs - compounds once widely used as refrigerants - and cosmic rays - energy particles originating in outer space - are mostly to blame for climate change, rather than carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

His paper, derived from observations of satellite, ground-based and balloon measurements as well as an innovative use of an established mechanism, was published online in the prestigious journal Physics Reports.

”My findings do not agree with the climate models that conventionally thought that greenhouse gases, mainly CO2, are the major culprits for the global warming seen in the late 20th century,” Lu said. “Instead, the observed data show that CFCs conspiring with cosmic rays most likely caused both the Antarctic ozone hole and global warming....”

The CIA, DHS and Bush White House Conned By Nevada Gambler

~

The Nevada gambler, al-Qaida, the CIA and the mother of all cons

The intelligence reports fitted the suspicions of the time: al-Qaida sleeper agents were scattered across the US awaiting orders that were broadcast in secret codes over the al-Jazeera television network.

Flights from Britain and France were cancelled. Officials warned of a looming "spectacular attack" to rival 9/11. In 2003 President Bush's homeland security tsar, Tom Ridge, spoke of a "credible source" whose information had US military bracing for a new terrorist onslaught.

Then suddenly no more was said.

Six years later, Playboy magazine has revealed that the CIA fell victim to an elaborate con by a compulsive gambler who claimed to have developed software that discovered al-Jazeera broadcasts were being used to transmit messages to terrorists buried deep in America.

Dennis Montgomery, 56, the co-owner of a software gaming company in Nevada, who has since been arrested for bouncing $1m worth of cheques, claims his program read messages hidden in barcodes listing international flights to the US, their positions and airports to be targeted.

The CIA took the information seriously, working with Montgomery at his offices and paying him an undisclosed amount of money.

The "intelligence" Montgomery claimed to have found was passed on to the White House and homeland security where it kick-started an alert that bordered on panic.

For months, the source of the information was kept under wraps within the CIA but once it became more widely known in the agency it immediately came under question.

Playboy quotes one former counterterrorism official who attended a briefing on the source as being furious. He said: "I was saying: 'This is crazy. This is embarrassing.' They claimed they were breaking the code, getting latitude and longitude, and al-Qaida operatives were decoding it. They were coming up with airports and everything, and we were just saying: 'You know, this is horseshit!' "

But the doubts began to prevail as Montgomery refused to reveal how he was finding the barcodes, when no one else could, and he demanded $100m for the software. The CIA also began to wonder why al-Qaida didn't use emails and web pages to communicate with its agents.

DDoS Attack Takes Down Amazon, Wal-Mart

~

If you’ve been doing some last minute Amazon holiday shopping on Wednesday evening, you’ve probably noticed that Amazon’s web site was sluggish and, at times, completely down.

The same fate greeted Wal-Mart, Expedia, and a number of smaller sites. The reason?

A severe DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on the servers of Neustar, the company that offers DNS services to many major companies under the name UltraDNS.

The attack that started at 4:45 p.m. PST lasted for about an hour, but it was quite severe, especially because it also affected Amazon’s S3 and EC2 services (upon which many other web services rely), as tweeted by Amazon’s lead Web Evangelist, Jeff Barr.

Currently, Amazon’s Service Health Dashboard shows that their services are working normally.

Luckily, Neustar managed to quickly mitigate the attack and contain it to the area of Northern California.

According to Allen Goldberg, vice president of corporate communications for Neustar, the company reacted to the attack within minutes. The source of the attack is currently unknown.

Army general backs off court martial rule for pregnant soldiers

~

"I just swallowed a watermelon, sir!"

A U.S. general in Iraq who listed pregnancy as a reason for court-martialing soldiers now says he'd never actually seek to jail someone over the offense.

In a conference call with reporters yesterday, Maj. Gen. Anthony Cucolo said the policy he issued last month allowing soldiers who become pregnant and their sexual partners to be court-martialed, was merely intended to underline the seriousness of the problems created when pregnant soldiers go home and leave behind a weaker unit.

"I need every soldier I've got," Cucolo said. "I need them for the entire duration of this deployment."

I have never considered court-martial for this, I do not ever see myself putting a soldier in jail for this," said Cucolo, who oversees U.S. forces in northern Iraq.

Peddling global warming fears puts big money in pockets of climate researchers

~

While there are big research grants available to climate scientists who peddle the politically correct theory of man-made global warming, researchers who dare to question the sacred dogma are dismissed as "deniers' and virtually cut off from funding.

The gravy train of research riches for the global warming doomsayers shows no sign of running off the rails, despite the exposure last month of hacked e-mails (or was it the work of a whistleblower?) from Britain's Climate Research Unit (CRU) revealing efforts by top climate scientists to fudge temperature data, finagle computer models and blackball critics.

Cures for Cancer AND Alzheimer's Found

~

People with Alzheimer's disease are less likely to get cancer and people with cancer are less likely to develop Alzheimer's, U.S. researchers said Wednesday.

Using data on more than 3,000 elderly volunteers, the researchers say they found that people who already had Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia, were slower to develop cancer.

The study, published online in the journal Neurology, says there were people who had both diseases, but that was significantly less common than had been expected.
