Threatening hip-hop lyrics send a US soldier to jail

~

The United States Army’s stop-loss plan, often cited as a policy that is no more than a back-door draft, has been one of the more controversial aspects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Stop-loss, simply put, allows the army to extend a soldier’s enlistment – involuntarily – from three months to, in some cases, more than a year.

Specialist Marc Hall is one of nearly 60,000 soldiers whose enlistments have been extended over the last six years. Hall was deployed to Iraq instead of being released when his enlistment term ended.

While soldiers have no recourse if the army decides to keep them deployed, Hall responded to his extended military tour by recording – and posting to his website – a punchy little hip-hop ditty about his displeasure with the policy… and it put him behind bars.
