As you can well see, Laura's USS Texas is in the lead

GROTON, Conn. — Former first lady Laura Bush was in Connecticut for a submarine race at the Navy's submarine base in Groton.

Bush gave brief remarks Friday morning as the three submarines raced to the end of the base and back.

Bush participated in many submarine races when she was first lady of Texas. She also spoke at submarine christenings in 2004 and in 2006 when she was the nation's first lady.

While getting quite involved in the race, Laura Bush said, “I can’t see who’s winning. It’s like when George was running for president.”

“Watching submarine races is my hobby,” Mrs. Bush added, “the sub I chose always wins. Of course, they have to tell me which one won, as I can’t see diddly squat.”

Rove asserts innocence in attorney firings

~

"You'll never get me, nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah nyah.nyah"

Ex-Bush aide Karl Rove's public disavowal of wrongdoing in the firing of nine U.S. attorneys breaches an agreement on congressional testimony, Democrats say.

Congressional Democrats say Rove's comments indicate he is trying to sidestep an agreement not to discuss his testimony.

"It's hardly surprising that Mr. Rove would minimize his involvement in the U.S. attorney firings or that selectively leaked documents would serve his version of events," committee spokesman Jonathan Godfrey said.

"The committee believes that the full record will show Mr. Rove's role in the firing of the U.S. attorneys was more substantial than his statements to the media indicate."

Sarah Palin inappropriately blasts the media

~

"Gotcha, media!"

Sarah Palin officially resigned from the Alaskan governorship this week, ending her tenure with a scathing critique of the media.

"How about in honor of the American soldier, you [the media] quit making up things. And don't underestimate the wisdom of the people. And one other thing for the media -- our new governor has a very nice family, too, so leave his kids alone!"

Palin's comments address many of the controversies she has had within the year since she was picked to be John McCain's vice presidential running mate.

To be fair, those controversies that have shadowed her since then have caused the public to view her negatively -- her approval rating has dipped significantly since emerging onto the national scene -- thus allowing Palin to make a claim of bias in the media.

But is it biased to report on the facts?

Ethics complaints dogged (and continue to haunt) Palin, including the substantially significant accusation that she abused her power by firing the state's Public Safety Commissioner over his refusal to fire Palin's ex-brother-in-law.

Could Dick Cheney Go to Prison?

~

Cheney seems to fear that if our system of justice works, he could be in for some serious, uncommuted jail time.

So far, the summer has been mild in the Washington area. But for former Vice President Dick Cheney, the temperature is well over 100 degrees. He is sweating profusely, and it is becoming increasingly clear why.

Cheney has broken openly with former President George W. Bush on one issue of transcendent importance — to Cheney. For whatever reason, Bush decided not to hand out blanket pardons before they both rode off into the sunset.

Cheney has complained bitterly that his former chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby should have been pardoned, rather than simply having his jail sentence commuted.

Cheney told the media that Bush left Libby "sort of hanging in the wind" by refusing to issue a pardon before leaving office. Libby had been convicted of perjury, obstruction of justice and lying to federal agents investigating the leak of a former CIA operations officer's identity.

"I believe firmly that Scooter was unjustly accused and prosecuted and deserved a pardon, and the president disagreed with that," Cheney said. He would disclose no details of his efforts to lobby Bush on Libby's behalf, saying they would be "best left to history."

Palin a victim of herself

~

I would like to make the argument that Sarah Palin, ultimately, destroyed Sarah Palin.

The difference between Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright, Condoleeza Rice and Palin is immense.

The former are educated women in both the university and the world, who don't constantly play the victim and offer something of substance.

Palin, on the other hand, is a woman who seems to feel the world is against her, nothing is ever her fault and that when things get hard, you quit.

If she thinks the Alaska governor job is hard, imagine how she'd fare in Washington.

UK urged to reveal 'torture' file

A human rights charity has begun a legal fight to force the UK government to reveal what it knew about an alleged CIA "rendition flight" in 2002.

Reprieve is to bring a case on behalf of a man who says he was tortured in Egypt after being flown there via the British territory of Diego Garcia.

Iqbal Madni, who was freed from Guantanamo Bay last year, claims he was tortured during a CIA interrogation.

President Palin "Impossible"

~

As speculation over Sarah Palin's presidential aspirations heat up now that she has stepped down as Alaska's governor, a former member of George W. Bush's staff said Palin had no chance of winning the White House.

"Impossible," is how Bush's former speechwriter David Frum described the likelihood Palin would become president.

Frum based his opinion on Palin's decline in approval ratings from when she was announced as John McCain's Republican presidential running mate in August termed her "divisive" within the party.

Asked what she represents for the future of the GOP: "political defeat."

Conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter sharply disagreed with Frum, saying Palin had "amazing star power," and said she represents the Republican Party that was known for winning elections in the last two decades.

Frum's criticism of Palin Monday was a continuation of a debate he had with Coulter on Saturday's "The Early Show" in which he said of Palin:

"Basically, quitting for the stated reason that you can't get anything done in your job and because you can't endure the criticism you're receiving and then cashing in, in order to make a lot of money is not a good resume with which to run for president of the United States. She was a calamitous candidate in October of 2008. We've never seen poll numbers for ... any national candidate decline as fast as they did for Sarah Palin. The more the American people know her, the more unacceptable she became and that trend's going to continue."

There is No Choice But to Probe Cheney-Bush Abuses

~

We have learned that Vice President Dick Cheney, in 2002, recommended sending troops into the Buffalo area to apprehend the "Lackawanna Six."

These people were accused of involvement in terrorism, which Cheney thought was enough of an excuse to bypass legal barriers to the use of soldiers to seize property or carry out police functions.

Honduras Coup: the US Connection

~

-Discussions in George Bush’s team revolved around the timing of the coup.

One option under consideration was to synchronize it with Georgia’s aggression against South Ossetia in order to demonstrate US assertiveness over all azimuths, but the idea was found too extreme even by the staunchest hawks given the upcoming elections in the US.

-The oil crisis that erupted in Honduras finally convinced Zelaya to change course.

US companies, which monopolized the business of importing oil to the country, manipulated prices and created an artificial shortage in the fuel supply.

Protests and strikes which left Honduras on the verge of a full-blown crisis made Zelaya temporarily expropriate oil storages owned by US companies.

As the next step, he forged closer ties with ALBA leaders and signed several deals with Venezuela to buy oil at discount prices, broaden trade between the two countries, and jointly modernize transit infrastructures.

One of Zelaya’s priority projects was to construct with the assistance of the ALBA countries a modern airport on the site occupied by the US Soto Cano Air Base....The threat of losing another strategic airbase in Latin America made Washington hurry up with the coup.

-Throughout 2008 Negroponte was building in Central America an intelligence and diplomacy network charged with the mission of regaining the positions lost by the US as well as of neutralizing left regimes and ALBA integration initiative.

At present the US ambassadors to Latin American countries – Hugo Llorens to Honduras, Robert I. Blau to El Salvador, Stephen G. McFarland to Guatemala, and Robert J. Callahan to Nicaragua - are Negroponte’s people.

All of them have practical experience of destabilizing and subverting political regimes unfriendly to the US, launching propaganda campaigns, and creating fifth columns in the form of various NGOs.

Seven years after the Downing Street Minutes were written – and more than four years after their disclosure – they remain one of the most damning pieces of evidence against both the Bush administration for its criminal deceptions in leading the nation to war and the Fawning Corporate Media for its complicity in hiding the truth from the American people, says Ray McGovern.

Official Calls For Investigation Into Bush Misuse of Power

~

Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich) is calling for a criminal investigation that would be followed with a "9/11-type panel" into abuses of power by George W. Bush.

Conyers announced plans this Friday while urging the Attorney General to help lead the probe.

Conyers, who is chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, also seeks subpoenas for former White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolton and White House attorney Harriet Miers; Conyers claims that they hold useful information for the probe.

The President has resisted probes in to the Bush Administration alleged abuses stating that citizens should be "looking forward and not backward."

Bush Was President, Dick Cheney Was The Fuhrer

~

By Chimpplanet

There are very few names of US Vice Presidents that Americans can remember by name.

Dick Cheney, however, will be remembered, not because of being in the shadows of George W. Bush, but because “shotgun Dick” was the Bush Puppet Master.

Every day more and more news are released proving that “bunker Dick” was a busy VP while hiding deep in the bowels of Washington.

By now, we have learned that Dick had his own Death Squad in the CIA with power to assassinate anyone he named as a terrorist leader.

This massive Cheney illegal program was concealed from the leaders in Congress.

Dick Cheney could also be investigated and potentially charged with conspiring to violate the anti-torture statute by authorizing and ordering waterboarding.

He could also be charged with violating another federal law ratifying the Geneva Conventions’ definition of war crimes.

He was a strong mouth piece during the lead-up to the Iraq invasion, constantly on news shows touting that Saddam Husein was working with Al-Qaeda and building a nuclear bomb. All of which was denied by his own Bush Administration. He eventually also denied he said all this.

But he made certain that his company. Halliburton, got no-bid contracts to feed and fuel the troops fighting in his Iraq War. This made both rich.

Here we have a man who accepted a series of student and family-related draft deferments during the Vietnam War and yet decided to send thousands to be killed and wounded in Iraq – all for profit.

And Cheney’s explanation for these deferments?

"I had other priorities in the '60s than military service."

Yeah, like making money – lots of money.

Everything Dick does is to get wealthier. Recently, he was stomping on all the major news networks for weeks, attacking President Obama.

As soon as he got his multi-million Dollar book deal, he shut up and returned to his underground bunker to plan his next profitable attack.

But how do you break the "torture-works" myth?

~

But how do you break the torture-works myth? somebody asked.

Turn Hollywood around, Robinson said. Ditch the electrodes and other imaginative techniques in favor of interrogation tactics that work in real life.

It won’t be easy, Robinson said. Torture has worked on the silver screen since the first war movie.

It could take a half-century showing interrogations working effectively some other way to change mass perceptions — and is cool, to boot!

“It has to be repetitive, and you have to continue it because they have a short memory out there,” Robinson said.

Sarah Palin's White House hopes sag

~

Sarah Palin moves out of the Alaska governor's mansion this weekend on the heels of new numbers suggesting the firebrand conservative has almost no chance of mounting a challenge to reclaim the U.S. presidency for the Republican party in 2012.

Support for Palin, who will formally hand over the governorship tomorrow, 18 months before her term of office was to expire, has fallen to its lowest point since she vaulted onto the political stage last year as John McCain's vice-presidential running mate, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Palin, 45, who vows to become a presence on the national stage, is now a tepid third choice among Republican-leaning voters, with 19 per cent support.

Dick Cheney Wanted to send troops to New York To Fight Al-Qaeda

~

The Bush Administration considered sending in U. S. troops into the streets of Lackawanna, NY in 2002 to arrest suspects who had been suspected of training and plotting with al-Qaida, the New York Times reported on its Web site late Friday night.

Former administration officials, who spoke to the Times on the condition of anonymity, said Vice President Dick Cheney was among advisers to then-President George W. Bush who argued that a president had the power to use the military on domestic soil.

Cheney secret team involved saboteurs as well as assassins

~

WMR has learned from U.S. and foreign intelligence sources that Dick Cheney’s super-secret clandestine operations team, primarily made up of Department of Defense Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) personnel, in some cases worked closely with their Israeli commando counterparts to carry out sabotage against Iranian and Pakistani nuclear facilities, as well as assassinate Iranian nuclear scientists, other individuals who were knowledgeable about the role of Israelis in supplying nuclear materials to Pakistan and Iran, and commit terrorist attacks on civilian aircraft.

Although the CIA decided against working closely with the Cheney-directed JSOC team, agency officials were well-aware of its operations and special relationship with Mossad “Kidon” department, which is responsible for conducting assassinations and kidnappings. “Kidon” is the Hebrew word for bayonet.

During the time Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was in charge of the Pentagon, his neoconservative subordinates, including Paul Wolfowitz and Douglas Feith, authorized the entrance into the Pentagon of top Israeli Defense Force and Mossad officers, including Kidon personnel, according to information obtained by WMR.

There were no records maintained of the Israeli visits or the identities of the visitors in what was described by Pentagon officials as a complete violation of Pentagon security procedures.

George W. Bush and Dick Cheney Basically Hate Each Other

~

Time has a great piece out today on the last days of the George W. Bush presidency, focusing on the nasty infighting between Bush and Dick Cheney over Bush's unwillingness to pardon Scooter Libby on his way out the door.

Citing numerous anonymous Bush White House sources, Time's Massimo Calabresi and Michael Weisskopf constructed a piece that reads like a gripping political novel.

Most compellingly, the two central characters', Bush and Cheney, views on pardons, particularly the pardoning of Scooter Libby, couldn't have been more diametrically opposed, with Bush being distrustful of the whole pardon process, believing firmly that pardons were little more than vehicles for the politically connected to save their asses when and if they ever get into trouble, while Cheney labored almost obsessively to secure a pardon for Libby.

In fact, Cheney's pardon crusade became so obsessive that it caused many within the administration to speculate that perhaps Libby had taken a bullet for Cheney in the Valerie Plame case, and that Cheney's dogged pursuit of a pardon was rooted in a personal debt of gratitude he owed Libby.

~

The CIA and a long history of assassinations

~

It just happened again. In mid-July the news headlines were suddenly full of allegations that in the wake of the 9/11 attacks Vice President Dick Cheney had ordered the formation of a CIA kill squad and expressly ordered the agency not to disclose the programme even to congressional overseers with top security clearances, as required by law.

As soon as CIA officials disclosed the programme to CIA director Norman Panetta, he ordered it to be halted.

The CIA insisted it had never proposed a specific operation to the White House for approval.

Before irrefutable evidence of its vast kidnapping and interrogation programme post-2001 surfaced, the CIA similarly used to claim, year after year, that it had never been in the torture business either.

Torture manuals drafted by the agency would surface - a 128-page secret how-to-torture guide produced by the CIA in July 1963 called Kubark Counterintelligence Interrogation, another 1983 manual, enthusiastically used by CIA clients in the 'Contra' war against central American leftist nationalists in President Reagan's years - and the agency would deny, waffle and evade until the moment came simply to dismiss the torture charge as "an old story".

Vanity Fair Editors Take a Red Pen to Sarah Palin's Resignation Speech

~

The first page of Sarah Palin's resignation speech after the Vanity Fair editors had their way with it.

For Sarah Palin, going rogue is nothing new--the woman who put the "ick" in maverick gave her Republican handlers fits as she'd start free-styling off the top of her head, off point and usually off-kilter.

Now that she's no longer a vice presidential candidate nor a governor, there are no more high-paid speechwriters or nervous chaperones--thus there's no more rogue for her to go. She's just Sarah being Sarah.

The editors at Vanity Fair decided to take a red (and blue, and green) pen to Palin's resignation speech, in an attempt to "whip it into publishable shape."

Check out the tweets in the screengrab below caught by Eric Spiegelman earlier tonight.

These five tweets are all conjoined, all part of the same dipshit-y thought, which was another one of her maniacal rants about the endless stream of ethics complaints logged against her.

Starting with the first one at the bottom, take a look at the time lapse in between the posting of each tweet.

In total, it took Palin 27 minutes to spit out this one thought, and it was still expressed almost completely incoherently.

Jenna, Barbara Bush were Secret Service’s nightmare

~

George W Bush’s daughters, Jenna and Barbara, kept the Secret Service at their feet at all times, claims a new book.

Writer Ronald Kessler alleges in his In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes With Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect that the twins always tried to hoodwink the security.

"Jenna would purposely try to lose her protection by going through red lights or by jumping in her car without telling agents where she was going,” the New York Post quoted Kessler as having written in the book.

“As a result, in a total waste of manpower, the Secret Service kept her car under surveillance so agents could follow her," he added.

Sally McDonough, Laura Bush''s press secretary, on being quizzed if Barbara, Jenna, or Hager had any comment, told the author: "I am making a formal request that you do not include any of this nonsense in your book."

Watching Sarah Palin

~

There were a lot of words that came out of Palin’s mouth, but there wasn’t any real substance behind them.

It seemed as if she was trying to say "change" and "hard-working" and "America" as many times as possible for no apparent reason.

For example, Palin would often state that her resignation was helping Alaska or something to that effect – but she never elaborated why resigning would help Alaska.

A kinder person would call that "spouting the bs." A less kind person would simply say she’s incoherent.

Finally, Palin seemed incredibly, incredibly nervous while answering reporters’ questions.

Perhaps the Katie Couric interview is still haunting her. Perhaps nerves cause her to simply freeze up in front of cameras. Whatever the cause, Sarah Palin still hasn’t adjusted to the national spotlight.

That’s a very significant failure after half a year on the national stage.

Perhaps resigning was a good idea after all.

Making Sense of Cheney's Madness

~

The seeming irrationality behind the George W. Bush administration’s “against the grain” (and the law) policies on torture, warrantless domestic surveillance, and now notification of Congress about CIA covert operations was not irrational at all.

Most experts say that torture is counterproductive because the subject will tell the interrogator what he or she wants to hear to stop the pain and because many military people say that it merely revs up the opposition, gives them no incentive to surrender, and gives them every incentive to torture U.S. military personnel.

Yet in the face of this mountain of authoritative opinion and the policy’s clear violation of international law and a U.S. criminal statute against torture, the Bush administration gleefully did it anyway.

Perhaps the worst incident at Abu Ghraib involved a girl aged 12 or 13 who screamed for help to her brother in an upper cell while stripped naked and beaten.

Iraqi journalist Suhaib Badr-Addin al-Baz, who heard the girl’s screams, also witnessed an ill 15-year-old who was forced to run up and down with two heavy cans of water and beaten whenever he stopped.

When he finally collapsed, guards stripped and poured cold water on him.

Finally, a hooded man was brought in.

When unhooded, the boy realized that the man was his father, who doubtless was being intimidated into confessing something upon sight of his brutalized son.

Ron Paul on Sarah Palin

~

"I wonder whether she's energizing the 15-20 year olds. That would be a question I would have. Because she doesn't talk about the Federal Reserve and some of these issues.

She doesn't talk too much about personal liberties, civil liberties, getting rid of drug laws, attacking the war on drugs, punishing people who torture."

Paul characterizes her supporters as "more establishment, conventional Country-Club type of Republicans."

That's certainly the case. The supposedly "conservative" Palin rarely espouses anything that could be taken as a conservative philosophy.

The reason young people follow Paul is that he shows them just how bad things will be for them thanks to all the generations back to the so-called "greatest generation," which came close to turning America into a socialist state. Now the kids will be paying the tab for that state for the rest of their lives.

Paul offers them a way out. Palin offers nothing. He's all ideas and no charisma. She's all charisma and no ideas.

A Palin Poem

~

Unknown in lower 48,
She took us by surprise.
A maverick from the tundra
Was her oft-stated disguise.

At first she tripped on Charlie
And blamed the hated left.
Who knew that Bush's doctrine
Carried such destructive heft?

The Katie threw her softballs --
Pick one more that you can hate!
Brown, Roe, Miranda?
She just stared, no talking straight.

So comics had a field day
With her winks and nods and betchas.
"He pals around with terrorists" --
Her false but favorite gotcha.

They lost, and rather handily,
Swept by history's tide.
But she was poised to marry up,
The right wing's favorite bride.

They'll wait four years, 2012,
For their pit bull in lipstick.
But now they'll have to wait some more,
'Cause she just up and quit.

THE HAGUE: Charles Taylor Cites C.I.A. In USA Jailbreak

Lots of dirt being found at the CIA lately: toreture, hit squads, dictators, coups, etc

Charles Taylor’s career from rebel leader to Liberian president, diamond dealer and despotic warlord, still holds many mysteries.

But this week in a court in The Hague, where he is on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity, he seemed eager to lift the veil on one of them.

Part of the lore surrounding Mr. Taylor is that he broke out of jail in Plymouth, Mass., while awaiting extradition on charges of embezzling $900,000 in Liberia. He told his judges that he did not escape on his own; rather, he said, he was helped by the Central Intelligence Agency.

America is bracing itself for a series of investigations that could see top officials from the administration of President George W Bush hauled in front of Congress, grilled by a special prosecutor and possibly facing criminal charges.

Isaac Asimov, “Humanist”

~

Isaac Asimov in 1965

Asimov wrote, "If I were not an atheist, I would believe in a God who would choose to save people on the basis of the totality of their lives and not the pattern of their words. I think he would prefer an honest and righteous atheist to a TV preacher whose every word is God, God, God, and whose every deed is foul, foul, foul."

The same memoir states his belief that Hell is "the drooling dream of a sadist" crudely affixed to an all-merciful God; if even human governments were willing to curtail cruel and unusual punishments, wondered Asimov, why would punishment in the afterlife not be restricted to a limited term?

Asimov rejected the idea that a human belief or action could merit infinite punishment. If an afterlife of just deserts existed, he claimed, the longest and most severe punishment would be reserved for those who "slandered God by inventing Hell"

Isaac Asimov was one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 9,000 letters and postcards.
